Rainier Beach Rises Again with Kevin Porter Jr.

Grit and grind. The true definition of the youthful Kevin Porter Jr.

He’s young and he rises and hails from Seattle. Ala Jamal Crawford and Doug Christie. The young man is talented. He possesses a left hand jumper with a step back that mirrors that of the great James Harden.

I’ve worked with him when he was a youth. As a mental health worker now, he defined what those in the industry consider guarded. He doesn’t talk much, and likes to let his work do all his talking.

He’s smart, and talented as a speaker. Some may think he isn’t a leader, but he lets his work do his talking. If you disappoint him, he’ll let you know. The guy is every bit of a leader, and someone kids could look up too.

He knows when to be serious, and when to be playful. I worked with him for a few years. I’m one of his biggest advocates, yet I’ve never spoken to a basketball executive. Only a close few friends and co-workers who I use the young Porter Jr. as a means to brag.

His life is the definition of grit and grind. He grew up losing family members at an early age. He has behavioral issues yes, but my understanding of him is that he is loyal. And that loyalty can cause problems for him. He likes to “keep it 100” as the youth say in the streets today.

I’m not a basketball executive, but from working with him for a few years all I can say about this young man is good things. He has the heart and the hustle to make it anywhere in life.

He was taking care of his sister growing up. He does sport some behavioral problems, but he always gets back up from suffering from losses. He’s had many in his life, including a brother and father. This young man is the hardest working individual I’ve ever encountered.

Did I know that he was going to be going to the NBA? To be honest I didn’t think so. I just know from statistics of how hard it is to make it to the League. He however possesses not only talent, but a passion to improve in life. I never had to raise my voice to get him to do what he needed to do in order to play sports. His GPA was always in good standing while I worked with him. He did have problems in certain subjects, but most of all youth had a problem with a subject.

You’d be making a bad decision by not choosing this man to your team. He is the definition of a team player. Kevin Porter Jr. is and will forever be one of the hardest and resilient individuals I’ve ever met in life. This is coming from someone who’s worked with him for years. His hard work and dedication will forever be his backbone, and it will keep him surviving setbacks and turmoils such as getting suspended. Don’t ever count Kevin Porter Jr. out. His dedication will prove all the naysayers wrong. And that is keeping it 100.
